They are also taller and can be placed under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make this model more adaptable to different flooring types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other high-end models, though, is its incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature that uses cameras to identify bits of embedded dirt. This is an improvement over the previous model which relied on an algorithm that was driven by sensors to bounce around the room, and then clean everything three times at different angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on both hard flooring and carpets. Its score on low pile carpet was very good and it also scored a high score on mid pile, too. It was successful in collecting pet hair, but struggled with long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best performing robots we've reviewed despite the slight limitations. It's also not as expensive as top-of the-line models. It's got plenty of features that we'd expect to find in a flagship model however, it doesn't come with all the fancy apps or smart home integration are found in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and get working immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will automatically return to the dock when it runs out of batteries or is full of debris. There are also indicators at the top of the bin that let you know when its bin is empty, or when it needs to recharge, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
