Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a UK-based program for personal trainers and fitness instructors. It recognizes qualifications based on industry and provides public liability insurance, and requires members to adhere to an industry-specific code of practice.

What is CIMSPA

CIMSPA, the UK-based professional body for fitness and health professionals is a reputable industry body that regulates trainers. Its mission is safeguarding the public's interests in using fitness experts by ensuring they have all the necessary abilities and technical expertise and also training and insurance. It is also responsible to develop and maintain standards of excellence for the fitness industry.

The organisation gathers input from a range of stakeholders including employers NGBs and Reps R Us deployers, as in higher education institutions, training providers, and professionals to shape the sector, and help its professionals and workforce. This is achieved by working in collaboration with the industry to better understand and recognize the professional needs and barriers to the ability of the sector to meet these needs.

As part of its mission, CIMSPA offers the basis for a quality assurance system for the fitness industry by means of an endorsement process. This process recognises both the content as well as the quality of formal qualifications and training. CIMSPA will typically endorse controlled (Ofqual) qualifications that are certified by an accredited awarding body like Focus Awards, Active IQ or YMCA Awards as well as certain kinds of specialist continuing professional development training (CPD).

CIMSPA membership also confers a certain amount of status in the business. Are REPs certificates recognized internationally?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was a public, independent register that operated through an membership scheme. It was created to protect the public and also to give fitness professionals and employers confidence that they were working with a person who held recognised and approved qualifications that aligned with National Occupational Standards.

REPs is a UK-based register and, as such, only covers the UK fitness industry. ICREPs which connects fitness professionals from around the world to international registers, has a worldwide presence. If you are an REPs-registered personal trainer in the UK and you are a REPs registered personal trainer, you can perform personal training in other ICREPs countries like Australia. Ireland, Poland, South Africa, and UAE.

It is important to note however REPs is not a guarantee of a job for fitness professionals or insurance coverage. REPs, which is an industry association, and Reps uk not a governing authority is a voluntary organization. International certification bodies with top international standing such as ACSM, NSCA, ISSA, NASM, and ACE are not affiliated with reps Uk and will therefore never offer job or insurance coverage to their fitness professionals.

REPs is dedicated to keeping their members up-to-date of the ever-changing trends within the fitness industry. REPs uses a REPs points system that requires members to earn a certain number of REPs every year to maintain their REPs status. These REPs points are based on their qualifications and the amount of CPD courses they have attended.
